He looked up once in two hours! No place to sit, so we both stood....I didn't have a book, but there was enough going on around the Embassy to watch during that two hours. It was never a dull moment...I watched a whole Horse brigade go by, quite interesting in the hustle and bustle of Rome. We weren't supposed to take photos I guess. He and I had to wait outside the Rome Embassy last fall while our partners went inside to conduct business..
He waited for another young man and I waited for my husband...to get a new passport after his was stolen the first day in Rome. It certainly takes alot of dried produce to make one jar.....soon as I get the majority of the veggies dried, I'll show you a finished product...right now, I have a few carrots, celery, onions, red bell peppers, tomatoes, summer squash: yellow crooked neck and zuchini's. And a pineapple, for some trail mix later.. It's going to taste so delicious this winter and until then it looks pretty! It's comforting to plan ahead and to be prepared for the winter. Or stuffing them with your favorite stuffing mix, for example: tuna, chicken salad, or some other favorite? You can also make nasturium butter, chopping up bits of the flower and mixing in butter....looks pretty and gives a little bite to your buttered biscuits! Try them! I think you'll like them...be sure to try them from your garden(this way you know they aren't loaded with chemicals) after they're washed and set aside to dry off a bit...
When we were young, my parents , mostly my mother would say,"Eat your dinner(mostly when we ate split pea soup)!" and I'd whine and carry on and have to sit at the table for hours until she would either give in or I would. I would remember her saying," you need to eat that, there's starving children in AFRICA!" Today, I was remembering that saying all over again,.....as I was thinking about all the people in Haiti struggling for survival everyday! Often times, I feel so guilty for buying food and then having to throw away what didn't get eaten and went to waste.

As a young child, I used to think, well, why should I have to eat that if they're starving in AFRICA, how is it, that if I eat my soup today, it is going to help one of them? Now, it wasn't that at all, it was supposed to remind us to be thankful for what we do have, because there are starving people all over the world.....and we need to be mindful of them, pray for them, do our part, maybe we could help teach others about world issues, make them aware, maybe we could teach our own families and one another to not be wasteful when there's so much poverty elsewhwere, maybe we could donate to others, maybe we could volunteer locally at food banks or shelters, there are so many things we could do to help those less fortunate around us.......it has recently occured to me that I need to fast for the people in Haiti.......while, I'm fasting, at least one meal a day, doing without food, I can be praying for the people of Haiti and that's a start.......and the $ I save from each meal I do without, I can send as a donation. It's a start, it's what I can do personally, it's what I learned to do, be mindful of others....Thanks mom, for instilling this in me.....
My Sister's Gardenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10567658095862602829noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-511007296714626819.post-58820071725958555322009-12-26T03:40:00.000-08:002009-12-26T03:47:57.323-08:00Wrapping up the Year...Just a quick to note:
the next few days are spent wrapping up the old year and preparing to ring in the New year? What are some of the ways you ring in the new year?
If you've never given it much thought and would like to spend the new year making a collage to sum up what your thoughts are....we traditionally get together and make Collages New Year's day.....
It uses up all our magazines we've collected over the year and we get to reflect on some of the things we do, or ideas we want to try or just sum up who we've become and then paste on the who we are or where we want to be in the new year ahead! It's a day of reflection! So many times it's interesting to see how these collages turn out.....they always surprise us.....we learn things about ourselves we don't even realize!
So if you're not sure what you'll be doing, and you don't have plans yet.....come out and join us for a girls get together....Big Guy will be most likely watching TV and enjoying a nap in the chair while we will be busy as bees.....cutting and pasting and reflecting ...
Hope to see you here....if you have a favorite magazine, quotes, embellishments, bring them, if not just come ...we have all the supplies here......and then some...I provide the glue, the scissors, and the poster board...plan to stay a few hours! No rushing on this day!
Happy New Year!
2010
Monica RoseMy Sister's Gardenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10567658095862602829noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-511007296714626819.post-81541926859041746302009-12-19T19:52:00.000-08:002009-12-19T20:09:26.206-08:00December MeetupI worked this morning-last day of a 3 part training class on garden 101 landscaping, so we didn't have a farmgirl meetup! not that any of you even realized that we were meeting...we're all so busy, we forget to look at the calendar! Next year I think we'll do a couple things different! I thought of all of you all day! I don't know what all of you have planned, but I will be hosting my annual New Year's scrap collage board that we do every year! You're all welcome to come, just let me know if you're really planning on coming so I can make sure that we have enough tables and chairs or cushions, etc.......Here's what to expect:
Bring your favorite magazines, quotes, cutouts, bling-bling, anything you've been saving but hate to toss cuz it's too pretty...this is a great place to attach it!!! we sit around New Year's day, very casual, bring slippers if you want to, wear sweats, or shorts, whatever the weather allows....if it's cool enough, we'll light the fire.....and sip hot chocolate or something else........and have fun with the glue and scissors........we paste(decoupage) a piece of poster board that is all about who we are...not what people want us to be or expect us to be, but who we, deep inside are! It's always fun to look back over these, year after year and see how we changed or have grown, etc........it jogs a memory of what we've been doing or what we are wishing we could do.......this is such a fun project, because you really learn alot about the other people doing the project also! so grab your stuff! and bring it along.......we'll have extra magazines, etc....but I always save all my magazines until this day and then we throw them all out afterward.....it's an excellent way to purge all those magazines collecting in the basket!!! If you're not sure about it....just come....you'll have fun! It's such a great way to meet new people! I supply the poster board, glue and usually have enough scissors on hand......and usually people share magazines.......they cut what they want and toss it into the pile of discard for anyone to snatch up...it's so much fun! I'll see if I can post a pic the next couple days!My Sister's Gardenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10567658095862602829noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-511007296714626819.post-3094539514030170042009-11-29T18:30:00.000-08:002009-11-29T19:43:01.918-08:00Time flies....about those Farmgirls at heart........we missed our Oct. meetup and regrouped in November.......
It was nice to see everyone that made it to the meeting...and we sure missed those of you that weren't able to attend! We met at Evelyn Lopez's house! It was so much fun.....she has a totally girly home with all her vintage collectibles and handsewn vintage clothing! And that hand made Santa......what a work of art! Evelyn made home made pumpkin bread that tasted so sweet and good! Her Sister Sandra came over and brought her version of Pumpkin bread also, both very different but equally as tasty! It was fun to share the morning with two sisters and their mom...it made me miss my sisters and mom! and of course Brenda also, she was so much fun, she took me on a tour of her garden and she gave me a fresh egg from her hen house! It truly was a great morning spending time with everyone! We made Friendship tea it was a perfect treat to go along with the homemade pumpkin bread! Here's the recipe for those of you that missed it:

Friendship Tea

2 cups tang or orange flavored drink mix
1 cup lemon flavored drink mix
1/4 cup instant tea
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ground nutmeg
1 package of cinnamon red hots
mix all together and package up to give as gifts........use fancy glass containers or little sealable baggies with handmade toppers to personalize! We made individual cup size and then a four cup size for gift giving!

Mix 3 tsp. in a cup of hot water, stir and enjoy!

we used to make this on the farm in the winter months when it was cold outside! We'd come in from having cold hands and feet and this would warm us right up as we drank this and sat on the hearth next to the fire! It smells wonderful and tastes good also! We called it "Russian Tea" but the recipe changed over the years a bit and we added the cinnamon candies....it makes a nice touch and we call it "Friendship Tea" because it's perfect to share with a friend!

A look back at the Europe vacation: (this blog needs to be read from the bottom up in order to make sense of it)........

so many colors and things to look at.....I brought home fresh milled lavender soap and lavender buds...

When I arrived in Malaga, I checked my email and had an email from Terri Pinder offering me a position with her at the Nursery! Here it is the weekend after Thanksgiving already!

So much has happened in the that time frame for me... I went to Europe for two weeks with friends and family! It was so much fun! We Flew into Rome, Italy....shall I say anymore! There's some History there folks! We spent 4 days there and there's so much more to see and do than we packed in those four days! We saw the Coliseum, and Guy had his passport pickpocketed so we had to go to the US Embassy and get another one! We also made it to the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, and so much more........WE took the train to Livorno(Florence) Italy where we caught up with the Cruise ship and the rest of the family and sailed off to France. We enjoyed a day in Nice and Monaco. Amazing Day here. We went to the Flower market there in Nice where I got all these great photos..there's so many more, but I didn't want to overwhelm you with all of them.

My Sister's Gardenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10567658095862602829noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-511007296714626819.post-38699218636590524752009-11-01T17:07:00.000-08:002009-11-29T19:44:50.989-08:00October highlights

As you all know by now, we cancelled the October Meeting. I was in Europe for two weeks, so I didn't want to plant it just to burn up while I was gone..so I waited.....however, I did see some beautiful fresh leaves at the flower market in France, so I took a photo for you, because soon as I saw it, I thought of all of you!
My Sister's Gardenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10567658095862602829noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-511007296714626819.post-16507568891357962572009-11-01T16:51:00.000-08:002009-11-29T19:47:23.482-08:00Life sometimes takes us by surprise!

It 's been a long time since I posted anything on here! I have been to Europe for two weeks since my last posting....and I've changed jobs........it's been a busy month! I went to Italy, France and Spain.......and yes, I have some great pictures for you......and then yes, I accepted a position with Terri at Pinder's Nursery! I am so excited! Tomorrow is my actual first day..I spent 5.5 hours there today, training on the register and meeting the other new people! Ann Marie, Betty, and Nicole.......all very interesting women........Ann Marie is a member of the garden club out of St. Lucie County.....Betty is a master gardener, and Nicole is a student at South Fork in the Horticulturist program! Susan works in the office on the wholesale end of the business and keeping us all straight on what we're doing! Sitting amount them I felt a little inadequate, but we all bring something different to the table! It will be fun to see the sales increase! I think it's going to be exciting! Isn't it fun to see the blessings of the things we sow? I truly am blessed to be on the team at Pinder's Nursery!

I look forward to seeing all of you at the next meeting and to catch up! He're's the lettuce I promised you from Europe at the Flower Market! A big fresh harvest of lettuce! has anyone had a chance to grow any yet? I know Traci told me she planted hers.....so I'm waiting to hear how it tasted!
My Sister's Gardenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10567658095862602829noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-511007296714626819.post-58750981939950745012009-09-22T18:46:00.000-07:002009-09-22T18:50:57.591-07:00Autumnal EquinoxWe planted our Caladium today......or I should say, I asked Kimmie and Melissa to plant it for me. So they waited until 11:50 am and then planted it in between rain clouds. There was a few minutes of sun today, so they were able to see where the shade was...........now we'll have to watch our little plant go dormant and then "wake up " in the spring at the next Equinox....Terri did such a fabulous job teaching about the different religions views on the Equinox. Basically, they all celebrate the Dark/Light of the world......very interesting ....
thank you Kimmie and Melissa for planting the plant for me............My Sister's Gardenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10567658095862602829noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-511007296714626819.post-58443019721792216592009-09-19T19:16:00.001-07:002009-09-20T19:07:15.985-07:00September 09 Farmgirl Meetup<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5383695927037832754" style="DISPLAY: block; Yes, a little on the warm side, but who noticed, we were all so engrossed in listening to Terri Pinder explain the color wheel in relationship to the colors we bring in to the garden! So interesting! We had our outdoor classroom next to the big beautiful citrus tree looking out over the pond full of Tiliapia or was there really an Aligator in there???
We each came home with a Caladium plant to put in the ground on Tuesday, on the Equinox sometime between noon and 1pm. We're planting it on the north side of the house and checking it again in the Spring after it's been in darkness and comes to light. Oh, I really should be looking at my notes because I really don't do it any justice. Terri has such a vast description of words and enthusiasm when she speaks about her plants that makes it all so interesting! I was listening to her today and thinking where was she when I was in Science? I would've loved her and the subject so much more! Terri's also so giving, she offered up a bird feeder and jug of bird seed for the person who's name was pulled from the flower pot...She allowed those that remembered their birdhouses a second entry into the drawing.....Can you believe I forgot mine after all that??? Oh, my goodness, that's what rushing out of the house will do for you! Ali was the blessed recepient of the new bird feeder and bird seed! Couldn't have been given to a more deserving person! Today was truly a delight and it was nice to see everyone, even for a short while! It was also encouraging to see the interest in growing our own gardens...I think we have some real gardeners coming to fruition! Thank you Terri for a wonderful Morning in the Garden! Keep watching for the photos to be posted! I'm so proud of all of you for keeping up the challenge and bringing your birdhouse!

My Sister's Gardenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10567658095862602829noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-511007296714626819.post-26831154489591116752009-09-17T15:30:00.001-07:002009-09-20T17:03:19.067-07:00Thank you in the form of a bird house! Birdhouse made in Oregon....front and back views

I came home today after a day at the office to find a big cardboard box from FEDEX waiting for me! Ooooh how I love packages and personal mail! I couldn't wait to open it as I knew it was from my sisters....
I tore open the lid, and inside was a card, with a bunch of those styrofoam peanuts.....under all the peanuts was a bubble wrapped something! When I ravaged through the layers of bubble plastic, I found this adorable birdhouse smiling at me! It was bright colored and leaning like the tower of Piza! It is so cute, I can't wait to hang it up and to get a photo of it to show you .....it's adorable!!! It makes my rendition of a birdhouse look dull and boring! I can't decide whether to hang it outside or keep inside???? So many decisions! What's a crazy bird to do!

My Sister's Gardenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10567658095862602829noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-511007296714626819.post-2266585893068963182009-09-06T06:10:00.000-07:002009-09-06T06:10:11.243-07:00Birdhouses...Have you ever looked around and checked out how many varieties of birdhouses there are? little ones, big ones, one story, two story, multi door, one door, one perch, multiple perches......colors...wow! Who knew how many colors could attract a bird? Even those ole coconuts laying around make birdhouses......I bought one in Hawaii once, who knew then I'd live in Florida where there's coconuts everywhere?
I used to have so many little wooden birdhouses, some in the shape of lighthouses, some like fishing shacks, some like condo's and the list goes on.......since moving to Florida, my house is smaller, and I took them outside to decorate around the pool...over the years, this Florida rain and humidity caused them to disintegrate, so year by year, they're tossed in the trash........just yesterday, Guy and I were straightening up the patio and noticed the birdhouses left out there are beginning to rot...this Birdhouse project is making me re-evaluate what to do with my little two story birdhouse I have staring at me to finish.......I better hurry and get started on it, if I plan on having it ready by the 19th of Sept. I hope the Birds like it..........do we even make them for birds, or for one another??? it's a form of art, unless you have the clean out at the bottom and you build them for the bird's benefit! And then, I guess, it's still a form of art, but it's also providing a healthy home for our feathered friends......either way, enjoy your project making.......I look forward to seeing everyone's version! My Sister's Gardenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10567658095862602829noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-511007296714626819.post-54653917576876324272009-09-05T07:27:00.000-07:002009-09-05T07:27:07.609-07:00Laughs from the heart....My daughter and her delightful friend Melissa are back in Missouri or Illinois or somewhere today.......they're having fun I'm sure wherever they are....I tried to tell my Kimmie that she should tell Melissa's mom about the http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/ website. Anyway, she hung up on me.......for whatever reason, I'm not sure, but today the girls called me and asked " what's that website again, Mom?" So, today, of course I had to razz her a bit and then I told her.....they laughed at me and said "Mom, Do you know what MaryJanes Farm is??" Oh, they think I am so naive....(usually, I am) But I just laughed and said, already had this conversation.....go check out the website....truly, you will love it! I told her how fun it is, and if you remember in girl scouts or brownies, the part about earning badges, you can even do that, only for adults.......it's like an adult Girl Scout program....Oh, that really sent them laughing hysterically, wherever they're driving...........she ended the call,"Mom, you're such a Nerd!" Isn't that great!
You know she's going to want to join someday, and then she'll be a nerd as well...............oh, but until then.....We'll let her laugh!
Love you, Kimmie!
I know Caylan will be the first to get a badge from your friends....she's probably working on one as we speak! Some of you think you don't, but it's just that you've never been comfortable enough to let it out! For some reason, someone told you that you aren't creative so you don't play! Well, start adventuring out......one step at a time....unleash that hidden talent! start with one ink pen, pencil, paintbrush stroke, photo, hammer and nails, wire tools, etc. etc........just start! That's the key! just put one foot forward and don't look back! even if you think it's ugly, to someone, it will be a treasure........
I'd rather have a handmade treasure from the heart any day than something purchased in mass production. go on.....get moving......step out and try it! And the smell of the outdoors soil, and summer fragrances, with the river nearby, oh yeah, for a moment this morning as I was dragging myself out of bed the memories were all rushing in........then, I realized that it was only the dog itching fiercely, that made the irrigation sprinkler sound and the air was a bit cooler this morning and a little musty, as we had a heavy rain in the night...even though it was only for a moment, it was memory of the farm, and that was enough to get me up and running, instead of out to the corn field, out to the travel agency. My Sister's Gardenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10567658095862602829noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-511007296714626819.post-26415154236759368582009-07-25T19:20:00.000-07:002009-07-25T19:24:46.915-07:00Velvet PansiesI went to the new JoAnn's Fabrics today for the first time....................OH MY Goodness! I told my husband" This is like Paradise"..So many crafty things in there, organizers, stickers, crafts and more craft supplies.........Oh My! I had to pick up some velvet for the little pansies we're handstitching this month! 1/8 of a yard is enough to make about a dozen or so of those pansies......I only wish they had some light colors! All they had were Christmas colors! So I ended up with a burgandy red.
We'll see how it turns out!
Let me know if you still need the pattern to get started! We're exchanging them at the next meeting! My Sister's Gardenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10567658095862602829noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-511007296714626819.post-54065317415506980412009-07-18T10:44:00.000-07:002009-07-18T11:02:00.765-07:00All about Me Collages "Who Am I"?

DEBORA

ALI

LILY

MONICA

TRACI

My Sister's Gardenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10567658095862602829noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-511007296714626819.post-86366348703957286712009-07-18T10:06:00.000-07:002009-07-18T10:32:20.407-07:00Farmgirls at Heart meetup!Jensen Beach was beautiful as usual.........what a pleasant morning to share thoughts and ideas.....shared pages for our notebook......Love the new recipe for Ali's summer salad.......Can't wait to try it!
Ali's going to be sharing a photo shoot class with us........tell us what things to look for when taking those pics!
thinking about a hiking trip, gardening trips, so many things.........
The challenge this month is to make the little velvet Pansy and hand stitch the outside edges and the veins of the flower......Can't wait to see them next month......
Shared sister stories, adventures, dreams.........traditions...........we'll have to start a tradition for the group..........
if you'd like to join us, just call me......we're really just getting started......it's fun to see how the group unfolds.........become a part of History....! Bring a friend!
